Size 6.5 mm (U.S. 10½) knitting needles. Size 6.5 mm (U.S. 10½) circular knitting needle 24 ins [60 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge. 3 stitch holders. Size 6 mm (U.S. J or 10) crochet hook for edging.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.

Note: When working from chart, wind small balls of the colors to be used, one for each separate area of color in the design. Start new colors at appropriate points. To change colors, twist the two yarns around each other where they meet on WS to avoid a hole.


FRONT

**With MC, cast on 54 (66) sts.

Knit 5 rows (garter st), noting 1st row is WS, and inc 2 sts evenly across last row. 56 (68) sts.

Work Chart I in stocking st, to end of chart, reading knit rows from right to left and purl rows from left to right, noting 4-st rep will be worked 14 (17) times.

With MC, work 4 rows even in stocking st, dec 1 st at center of last row. 55 (67) sts.**

Next row: K1. K2tog. K12 (18). Work 1st row of Chart II across next 25 sts. K12 (18). ssk. K1.

Next row: P14 (20). Work 2nd row of Chart II. P14 (20).

Next row: K1. K2tog. K11 (17). Work 3rd row of Chart II. K11 (17). ssk. K1.

Next row: P13 (19). Work 4th row of Chart II. P13 (19).

Next row: K1. K2tog. K10 (16). Work 5th row of Chart II. K10 (16). ssk. K1.

Next row: P12 (18). Work 6th row of Chart II. P12 (18).

Cont working Chart II, AT SAME TIME, dec 1 st each end of needle (as before) on next and every following alt row until 29 (35) sts rem. Purl 1 row.

Divide for front opening: Next row: (RS). K1. K2tog. K11 (14). Cast off center st. K11 (14). ssk. K1.


LEFT FRONT

Cont on last 13 (16) sts.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: K1. K2tog. Knit to end of row.

Rep last 2 rows 6 times more.

Purl 1 row. Leave rem 6 (9) sts on a st holder.


RIGHT FRONT

With WS facing, join MC to 13 (16) sts.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: Knit to last 3 sts. ssk. K1.

Rep last 2 rows 6 times more.

Purl 1 row. Leave rem 6 (9) sts on a st holder.


BACK

Work from ** to ** as given for Front.

Next row: K1. K2tog. Knit to last 3 sts. ssk. K1.

Next row: Purl.

Dec 1 st each end of needle (as before) on next and every following alt row until 13 (19) sts rem. Leave rem 13 (19) sts on a st holder.


FINISHING

Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.

Sew side seams.

Hood: With RS facing, circular needle and MC, K6 (9) from right front st holder. K13 (19) from back st holder. K6 (9) from left front st holder. 25 (37) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:

Next row: Purl.

Next row: K12 (18). M1. K1 (place marker on last st for center st). M1. K12 (18).

Next row: Purl.

Next row: Knit.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: Knit to marked st. M1. Knit marked st. M1. Knit to end of row.

Rep last 4 rows twice more. 33 (45) sts.

Cont even until Hood measures 6 (7) ins [15 (18) cm] ending with a purl row. Cast off. Fold Hood in half and sew cast off edge tog.

Hood and neck edging: With crochet hook, join MC with sl st at hood seam. Ch 1. Work sc evenly down Hood edge, around neck opening and up opposite side of Hood edge. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
